Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association was established in April of 1897. Fifteen men started the company by paying their share of the cost at $2.00 each, a total of $30.00 to start the business.

The Insurance Association was formed because these men were interested in the welfare of their neighbors. Some had lost their homes and had to start again with no funds. Policyholders paid a membership fee when they obtained insurance. As members they could vote at all Annual Meetings.

There have been many changes over the years. In September of 1984 the Association moved from their office in the Dime Bank Building to their own office at 435 Third Street, Marietta. There are a variety of policies now to cover individual needs, compared to when the Association began. At the present time there are 4 full time employees and 1 part-time employee in the office, 16 agencies and 5 directors.
